Water and wastewater utilities have a key role and considerable power in the global energy transition. In terms of generating energy, wastewater can be processed into biomethane, often by anaerobic digestion, before being injected to gas grids or used to power vehicles. Looking at hydrogen, Australia for example is targeting its available wastewater for the 5.5 billion litres of water needed for electrolysis to meet its 2030 hydrogen production target as per the National Hydrogen Strategy, equivalent to the annual water consumption of 1.6 million people, which stimulates wastewater electrolysis R&D.

As well as energy production potential, utilities are also battling the costs of maintaining expansive water and wastewater networks, and managing new regulations for issues such as NRW, stormwater and sludge, and are constantly seeking technologies to help them optimise their networks and deal with the challenges. Reduced freshwater reserves and the effects of climate change mean that better monitoring and repair technologies are in high demand.
