Cities represent one of the major reasons we need complex systems for human management: for water, waste, energy and food. As the UN projects that 2.5 billion more people (two out of every three people) will be living in cities by 2050 – and major urban conurbations already consume around 75% of global primary energy, intelligent strategies and technologies are needed to create circular models for such large numbers of people living in proximity, while safeguarding the environment and climate.
